Bonsucro's Sugarcane Pathway: Participate in our public consultation

Have your say on our greenhouse gas mitigation pathway for the sugarcane sector, and our target-setting tool and guide

Climate action is vital to the future of business. Every sector needs to play its part to avoid catastrophic impacts from climate change.

Find out more about why it is important to set science-based targets in sugarcane.

Through our Sugarcane Pathway, we’re equipping the sugarcane sector with guidance and tools to set science-based mitigation targets for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Sugarcane Pathway project covers all sources of GHG emissions from sugarcane production (agriculture phase only), as well as carbon removal on sugarcane plantations.

We want to see wide scale adoption of greenhouse gas mitigation targets in the sugarcane sector, and so we’ve now opened up a public consultation on our Sugarcane Pathway. This is your chance to shape a sector-wide tool to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with science.

We are inviting you to provide feedback on the data requirements, data gathering and overall usability of the draft tool and guide. Download the documents, complete the tool and have your say on our Sugarcane Pathway using the button below.

Have your say

The deadline for feedback from the public consultation is Monday 7 August 2023. If you have any questions, please contact Livia Ignacio, the Pathway Project Lead.

This public consultation is being run alongside a pilot phase to test various aspects of the tool and guidance. Fourteen companies from across the sugarcane supply chain tested the tool and guide during the pilot phase, and shared their feedback. Among the participating companies, 70% of participants were suppliers, and 30% were buyers. We heard that 23% of these pilot partners have already defined or are on their way to define a FLAG-SBTi target for scopes 1 and 2, and almost 18% for scope 3. These percentages are low, and there is an opportunity for this Sugarcane Pathway to play a significant role – so it is vital you have your say on our target-setting tool and guidance.

After the consultation has closed, Bonsucro and Quantis, our partner in developing the Pathway, will look at the feedback and use it to improve the target-setting tool and guidance. The final versions will be released towards the end of the year.

Climate change will have a major impact on the sugarcane sector, from production practices to workers’ health. The Sugarcane Pathway is part of Bonsucro’s wider work on driving climate action in the sugarcane sector.
