Smallholder farmers are the crucial foundation of many sugarcane supply chains around the world.
Considering the beneficial impact of sustainability for smallholder farmers and their dependent supply, and in order to widen access to certification, Bonsucro launched the Production Standard for Smallholder Farmers in 2018.
The Standard is based on our rigorous Production Standard v4.2 but has been adapted to facilitate collecting data on a much smaller scale meaning the cost for implementation is lower and is therefore more inclusive.
What is the Bonsucro Production Standard for Smallholder Farmers?
The Standard has been designed to support the uptake of the Bonsucro Principles and Criteria for sustainable sugarcane farming.
The standard adapts the set of principles, criteria and indicators of the Bonsucro Production Standard v4.2 – which defines sustainable performance of sugarcane producers and processors – for the smallholder farmer context.
The Bonsucro Production Standard for Smallholder Farmers covers environmental, social, and economic sustainability with performance-based indicators, specifically designed for application to sugarcane production.
To adhere to the standard, farmers must ...
Comply with national/regional legislation
Provide workers with a contract stating working hours
Provide all workers with personal protective equipment
Keep a diary to record data
including volume of agrochemicals used, water use, number of workers, farm size and yields
Have a health and safety and an environmental management plan
Have a method for workers to record grievances
Please note the Production Standard for Smallholder Farmers will be revised in 2023-2025.
