Code of Conduct

Bonsucro’s Code of Conduct is the foundation of members’ agreement with Bonsucro to be part of the platform. It is a key mechanism by which Bonsucro drives its vision of collectively accelerating the sustainable production and uses of sugarcane.

All members of Bonsucro commit to working towards Bonsucro’s vision and complying with the Code of Conduct. The Code applies to all membership classes.

The first version of Bonsucro’s Code of Conduct was published in 2011. Since then, Bonsucro has been through a major strategy shift and the way we engage with members has significantly changed. In addition, the role of international sustainability standards, like Bonsucro, has evolved particularly in relation to human rights. As such, the Code has been redrafted to more clearly articulate members’ roles and responsibilities as members of Bonsucro. The changes support:

  • Bonsucro’s risk management and due diligence processes, including human rights due diligence
  • Members’ sugarcane processing, production and sourcing activities alignment with Bonsucro’s vision and mission and best practice in this space.

Bonsucro supports convergence with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and draws on the OECD-FAO Guidance for Responsible Agricultural Supply Chains. These standards are globally authoritative frameworks for managing social and environmental risks in business activities and supply chains.

Revisions to the Code of Conduct were made following extensive consultations with members since November 2018. The new code takes effect from 1 April 2020. All new members will have to undergo additional due diligence steps at the time of their application, by completing the Code of Conduct self-assessment form.
