20th December 2021
After a two-year development process, the new Bonsucro Production Standard was finalised this month and approved by Bonsucro’s Board of Directors on 17 December.
The Bonsucro Production Standard is at the heart of everything Bonsucro does. It sets out a definition of what sustainable sugarcane production should look like, providing a comprehensive metric tool for sustainable farming and milling. The new Standard is progressive and keeps Bonsucro at the forefront of sustainably in sugarcane and agriculture.
It was developed by a Working Group of independent experts and with inputs from members and stakeholders through a transparent and participatory consultation process.
What next?
The Standard is currently being translated and designed. It will formally launch on 17 January 2022 along with additional policies and tools:
- New calculator
- New implementation guidance for members
- New auditing guidance for certification bodies
- New certification protocol
To enable members to prepare, a transition period will run between 17 January and September 2022. A series of webinars will be held in January to provide more information on the new Production Standard – how it was developed, an overview of the changes, information on the transition period and next steps.

Bonsucro would like to thank everyone involved. It was a big effort of the secretariat and of many committed people but in particular the members of the Working Group for their expertise, time and commitment. Also the Members’ Council for their inputs, the Technical Advisory Board for their oversight, and the Board of Directors for their counsel.
Danielle Morley, Bonscuro’s CEO said, “We had a positive year at Bonsucro and I’m proud of all that we have achieved. We launched our new strategic plan in June and we’re ending the year by publishing our latest impact in our Outcome Report and finalising the new Standard. I look forward to future collaborations and success in 2022.”
