Webinar: Launching our new tool for greenhouse gas emissions

We launched our new tool, the ClimateCane Tracker, which will help sugarcane producers set targets and a clear pathway for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in sugarcane production.

This webinar was for Bonsucro members only.
The webinar was delivered in English with live Portuguese and Spanish translation. Recordings are available upon request for Bonsucro members.

Our CEO, Danielle Morley, and our Head for South America, Livia Ignacio, presented our new tool, the ClimateCane Tracker, and explained the benefits it could bring to our members.

To avoid catastrophic impacts from climate change, greenhouse gas emissions must nearly halve by 2030, and drop to net zero by 2050 (IPCC). A growing number of companies have made commitments to net-zero emissions and to supporting the Paris Agreement on climate change. Many have set credible targets for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions following the guidance of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute and WWF. While the SBTi has developed mitigation pathways within its Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) guidance for commodities such as palm oil and soy, it has no specific plans for sugarcane.

Bonsucro has stepped in to develop a FLAG mitigation pathway for the sugarcane sector. This involves calculating a baseline of current land-based emissions per kilo of sugarcane production, looking at projected future production, then setting ambitious but achievable targets for reducing these emissions over the coming years – all in line with science to help maintain a stable climate.

As part of our mitigation pathway, we have created the ClimateCane Tracker. This tool will help Bonsucro members set targets and a clear pathway for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in sugarcane production.
