We are aware of the recent article published in Swiss media regarding social conditions in sugarcane production in India. The article repeats the reports in the New York Times last year that identified the risk of forced hysterectomies and bonded labour among women sugarcane workers in Maharashtra and made allegations in relation to Bonsucro members.
Bonsucro takes all allegations of human rights violations extremely seriously. We recently shared an update on what we are doing to strengthen respect for human rights and decent work in sugarcane farming in India and beyond and Bonsucro remains steadfastly committed to continuing this work and making a tangible difference.
Since the last update, the mill named in the articles, Dalmia, has recently undergone its annual audit by its certification body Control Union, and we are expecting the results soon.
We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
